Dimming Fluorescent Lights

July 12, 2010

by Jon Curtner

In this time of “going green” many people are replacing their incandescent lights with fluorescent bulbs that use much less energy. However, unless your fluorescent bulbs are specially made to act like incandescent lights (they will be labeled for this) they cannot be dimmed with the old dimmer used on your incandescent lights. Doing this will burn them out prematurely and you will not get a very effective dim anyway. Two solutions to this are: 1) Purchase fluorescent lights which are “dim-able” with the existing dimmer or, 2) replace the dimmer with one made for fluorescent lights specifically.
